— How it works

Movers estimate = a size-based figure scaled by service level and, for intercity, distance. Gross = movers + deposit + brokerage + add-ons + overlap + setup + travel + contingency. Net = gross − the old deposit refunded (less any painting deduction). Peak cash = everything due before the refund arrives.

The movers estimate is a range, not a number

Anyone who quotes a single exact figure for packers and movers is guessing — real quotes for the same job vary widely with season, day and how hard you haggle. So this calculator derives the estimate from the things that actually drive it — your home size, the distance, and the service level (a DIY truck-and-labour job, standard packers, or full-service door-to-door) — and presents it as a low/typical/high range. A within-city move prices mostly by volume; an intercity move adds a distance-based haulage cost that can dwarf the local figure. Use the typical for planning, budget toward the high, and get two or three real quotes to replace the range with a firm number.

Worked example — local 2 BHK, standard service, ₹25,000 rent, 2-month deposit: Movers ≈ ₹25,000 (range ₹20,000–₹32,500). Deposit ₹50,000 — already double the movers. With a 10% buffer the gross lands near ₹85,000, and the deposit is the single biggest line.

The costs everyone forgets

The movers are the obvious cost; the budget-breakers are the ones that aren’t quoted. The deposit and brokerage on the new place are usually the largest cash lines of all. Then there’s AC uninstall-and-reinstall, geyser servicing, packing materials, floor and lift charges, utility connections and transfers, transit insurance, a stretch of double rent, and the curtains-and-fittings the new layout demands. The calculator itemises all of these and nudges you about the ones you haven’t added yet, because a move blindsides people not through any single big number but through a dozen small ones arriving together. The cost-by-category chart makes the point visually: the deposit usually towers over everything else.

Gross, net, and the peak-cash trap

The figure that matters for your bank account isn’t the net cost — it’s the peak cash. You pay the new deposit and brokerage before you move, the movers on the day, and the setup in the first week; your old deposit comes back only weeks later, after the final inspection. So while the refund genuinely lowers what the move costs you in the end, it does nothing for the crunch up front. The calculator shows the gross (everything you pay), the net (what you’re down once the refund lands), and the peak cash you need in hand before it does — and the when-due column turns the whole sheet into a cash-flow plan. Float the gross, treat the refund as a rebate that arrives later, and the move won’t catch you short. Not financial advice — a planning estimate; get real quotes.

— Reader questions

How much do packers and movers cost?

It depends on your home size, the distance and the service level, and real quotes vary widely — which is why this calculator gives a low/typical/high range rather than one false-precision number. A local move prices mostly by volume; an intercity move adds a distance-based haulage cost. Get two or three quotes to firm it up.

What is the difference between the gross and net moving cost?

The gross is everything you pay; the net is what you’re actually down once your old deposit is refunded. They differ because the refund arrives weeks after you’ve paid for the move — so the net is the eventual cost, but the gross (or the peak cash before the refund) is what your bank account has to survive.

Why does the deposit refund not reduce the cash I need?

Timing. You pay the new deposit and brokerage before moving in, but the old deposit comes back only after you’ve moved out and the place is inspected. The refund lowers the eventual net cost, but you still need the full amount on hand up front — which is why the calculator separates peak cash from net cost.

What costs do people forget when moving?

The classics: AC uninstall and reinstall, geyser servicing, packing materials, floor/lift charges, utility connections and transfers, transit insurance, double rent during the overlap, deep cleaning, and the new curtains and fittings a different layout needs. The calculator itemises these and flags the ones you haven’t added.

How much should an intercity move cost versus a local one?

An intercity move is typically far more, because distance adds a haulage cost on top of the volume-based figure, and you may also ship a vehicle and travel the family. Switch the move type to intercity and enter the distance to see the difference; the calculator adds the distance-based component automatically.
