— How it works

Monthly EPF inflow = 12% of (basic + DA) from you + the employer’s EPF share (12% less the EPS diversion). The employer’s 8.33%, capped via the ₹15,000 wage ceiling at ₹1,250/month, goes to EPS (a separate pension). Interest accrues on the running balance and is credited yearly; the corpus grows to retirement, with optional increments.

How your EPF is built

Each month you contribute 12% of your basic + DA to EPF, and your employer contributes another 12%. But the employer’s share is split: 8.33% goes to the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and the remainder to your EPF. Crucially, the EPS part is calculated only on a capped wage of ₹15,000 — so at most ₹1,250 a month diverts to EPS, and everything above that from the employer’s 12% lands in your EPF. The whole EPF balance earns interest at the rate EPFO declares each year, credited annually.

Worked example — ₹25,000 basic + DA, age 30 to 58, 8.25% interest: You and your employer put about ₹4,750 a month into EPF; over 28 years that grows to roughly ₹68 lakh, of which over ₹51 lakh is interest. Separately, ₹1,250 a month goes to EPS, funding an estimated ₹6,000/month pension.

The EPS pension, and boosting with VPF

The EPS portion isn’t part of your withdrawable EPF corpus — it funds a separate lifelong monthly pension after 58, roughly (pensionable salary × years of service ÷ 70). The calculator shows it on its own so you don’t double-count it. To grow the EPF corpus itself, Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) lets you contribute beyond the mandatory 12%; it earns the same tax-advantaged EPF interest, and even a few extra percent compounds into a large sum over a career. Salary increments do the same by lifting every future contribution.

A projection, not a statement

EPF parameters are statutory and change: EPFO sets the interest rate annually (8.25% for 2024–25, but it varies year to year), and the ₹15,000 EPS ceiling has been revised before and may be again. This tool holds your chosen rate constant across the projection, so treat the result as an estimate. Your actual balance, contributions and interest are in your EPF passbook on the EPFO member portal — always check there for the authoritative figure.

— Reader questions

How is the EPF corpus calculated?

You contribute 12% of basic + DA and your employer contributes 12%, of which 8.33% (capped at ₹1,250/month via the ₹15,000 ceiling) goes to EPS and the rest to EPF. The combined EPF balance earns interest each year and compounds to retirement.

How much of the employer’s contribution goes to my EPF?

The employer’s 12% minus the EPS diversion. On a salary above ₹15,000, ₹1,250 goes to EPS and the balance of the 12% goes to your EPF — so the higher your salary, the larger the EPF share.

What is the EPS pension I’ll get?

Roughly (pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70), with pensionable salary capped at ₹15,000. So about 28 years of service gives an estimated ₹6,000 a month for life — separate from, and on top of, your EPF lump sum.

Is VPF worth it?

Often yes — Voluntary PF earns the same EPF interest (8%+), which is high for a guaranteed, tax-advantaged return, and it compounds. Adding a few percent of salary as VPF can grow your corpus substantially over a long career.

Is this my exact EPF amount?

No — it’s an estimate using a constant interest rate, while EPFO sets the rate each year and the ceiling can change. Your real, up-to-date balance is in your EPF passbook on the EPFO member portal.
