Download— How it works
Total monthly income = total annual income ÷ 12, where each source is first normalised to annual (hourly = rate × hours/week × weeks/year; monthly × 12; etc.).
Your income, per month
Monthly income is your total yearly income divided by twelve. A pay rate is converted first: $30 an hour over a 40-hour, 52-week year is $62,400 a year, or about $5,200 a month; a $90,000 salary is $7,500 a month. Annual streams like a bonus or rental are spread evenly across the twelve months. The result is your gross monthly income, with the annual equivalent and a per-source breakdown alongside.
Worked example — $80,000 salary + $20,000 freelance: Total annual $100,000 → about $8,333 a month (salary $6,667, freelance $1,667). A $30/hour job alone is roughly $5,200 a month.
Spreading lumpy income
Bonuses, freelance gigs and dividends rarely arrive in equal monthly slices, but for budgeting it helps to see them as a smooth monthly figure. This adds each annual stream and divides the total by twelve, so a $12,000 yearly bonus shows as $1,000 a month. The breakdown and chart show how much of your monthly income leans on the steady salary versus the variable pieces — useful for knowing how much you can rely on month to month.
Gross, not take-home
These are gross figures, before income tax, FICA/National Insurance and deductions, and each income type is taxed differently, so a single net monthly figure isn’t straightforward. For after-tax monthly pay on a salary, use the take-home or paycheck calculator; for freelance income, the self-employment or freelance-tax calculator.
— Reader questions
How do I calculate my monthly income?
Add up your annual income from all sources and divide by 12. A $90,000 salary is $7,500 a month; add a $12,000 bonus and it’s $8,500. Hourly pay annualises first (rate × hours/week × weeks/year) before dividing.
How much is $30 an hour per month?
Full-time (40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours), $30/hour is $62,400 a year, about $5,200 a month before tax. Fewer hours lower it proportionally.
How do I turn an annual salary into monthly income?
Divide by 12. $60,000 a year is $5,000 a month; $90,000 is $7,500. Add any bonus or side income (as annual amounts) and the total is divided by 12 too.
Should I include bonuses and side income?
For a full monthly figure, yes — enter them as annual amounts and they’re spread across the 12 months. The breakdown shows each source’s monthly share.
Is this gross or net monthly income?
Gross — before tax and deductions. Use the take-home, paycheck or self-employment calculators to estimate net monthly pay.
