— How it works

Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier (1.5× default). Total = regular pay + overtime + any double-time. Blended hourly = total pay ÷ total hours.

How overtime pay works

In the US, the Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime at one-and-a-half times your regular rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week. So if you earn $25 an hour, overtime hours pay $37.50. Your total for the week is the regular hours at the normal rate plus the overtime hours at the higher rate. Multiply that weekly figure by 52 for a rough annual, though overtime usually varies week to week.

Worked example — $25/hr, 40 regular + 5 overtime hours: Regular $1,000 + overtime 5 × $37.50 = $187.50 → total $1,187.50 for the week. Blended rate $26.39/hr; annualised about $61,750.

Double-time and state rules

Plain time-and-a-half over 40 hours a week is the federal floor, but some states and union contracts go further. California, for instance, pays overtime after 8 hours in a single day and double-time (2×) after 12 hours in a day or beyond 8 on a seventh consecutive day. If your rules include a double-time tier, add those hours in the advanced options and the breakdown splits regular, overtime and double-time separately.

The blended rate, and what’s not here

The blended effective hourly is your total pay divided by all hours worked — it sits between your regular and overtime rates and is handy for comparing jobs. This is straight pay arithmetic before tax; for take-home, run the annualised figure through the paycheck or take-home calculator. It also doesn’t model shift differentials or multiple pay rates in one week — add those to the rate if they apply.

— Reader questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Multiply your overtime hours by your hourly rate by the overtime multiplier. At $25/hour with time-and-a-half, each overtime hour pays $25 × 1.5 = $37.50. Total weekly pay is your regular hours at the normal rate plus that.

What is time-and-a-half?

It’s 1.5× your regular hourly rate — the US FLSA overtime rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. A $20 rate becomes $30 for overtime hours.

When does double-time apply?

Federal law doesn’t require double-time, but some states and contracts do — California pays 2× after 12 hours in a day, for example. Enter double-time hours in the advanced options to include them.

What is the blended rate?

Your total pay divided by total hours worked. Working 40 regular + 5 overtime hours at $25 gives $1,187.50 over 45 hours — a blended $26.39 per hour.

Is this my take-home overtime pay?

No — it’s gross pay before tax. Overtime is taxed as ordinary wages; run the annualised total through the take-home or paycheck calculator to estimate net pay.
