— How it works

Hourly = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). The default 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours is a standard full-time year.

Salary to hourly: divide by your hours

The hourly rate behind a salary is the annual divided by the hours you work in a year. The standard full-time year is 40 hours a week across 52 weeks — 2,080 hours — so you divide the salary by 2,080. A $60,000 salary works out to $28.85 an hour; $50,000 is about $24.04. Work fewer hours and the hourly rises (the same pay over less time); a 37.5-hour week, part-time hours or weeks off all change it, so set the hours and weeks to match your job.

Worked example — $60,000 a year, 40 hrs/week, 52 weeks: 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. At 37.5 hours that’s 60,000 ÷ 1,950 = $30.77 an hour.

The effective hourly once leave is counted

For a salaried job, paid time off doesn’t cut your pay — so the standard hourly spreads the salary over all 2,080 hours as if every one were worked. But the rate you really earn per hour worked is higher, because you’re paid for hours you take as leave. Enter your paid days off and the calculator adds an effective hourly: salary ÷ the hours you actually work. It’s the figure to compare against a contract or freelance hourly rate, where unpaid time off is on you.

Gross, not take-home

The hourly here is gross — derived from your pre-tax salary, before income tax, National Insurance or FICA, retirement contributions and other deductions. Your net hourly (what actually lands per hour) is lower. To estimate that, run the salary through a take-home or income-tax calculator first, then divide that figure by your hours. Overtime is also excluded — this is the rate for your standard contracted hours only.

— Reader questions

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), $50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour. Fewer hours raise the hourly proportionally.

What is $60,000 a year hourly?

$60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85 an hour at standard full-time hours.

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year — typically 40 × 52 = 2,080. So salary ÷ 2,080 gives the hourly. Adjust the hours or weeks if your schedule differs.

Why is the effective hourly higher than the standard one?

Because the same salary is spread over fewer hours once paid time off is removed. The standard hourly uses all 2,080 hours; the effective hourly uses only the hours you actually work, so each is worth more.

Is this my take-home hourly rate?

No — it’s gross, from your pre-tax salary. Your net hourly is lower after tax and deductions. Estimate take-home first, then divide by your hours, for an after-tax rate.
