— How it works

Your income is split across the brackets: each slice is taxed at that bracket’s rate, and the total is the sum. Your top bracket is the highest rate your income reaches; your effective rate is the total tax divided by income.

Your income is sliced across brackets

The US federal income tax is progressive: your income is divided into slices, and each slice is taxed at its own bracket’s rate. The first slice is taxed at 10%, the next at 12%, then 22%, and so on. Your “top bracket” is just the highest rate any of your income reaches — not the rate you pay on all of it. The breakdown table is the heart of this calculator: for each bracket it shows the range, the rate, how much of your income is taxed in that band, and the tax that produces. Add them up and you have your total tax; divide by your income and you have your effective rate, which is always lower than the top bracket.

Worked example — $75,000 taxable, single, 2025: 10% on the first $11,925 = $1,192.50; 12% on the next $36,550 = $4,386; 22% on the remaining $26,525 = $5,835.50. Total $11,414 — a 15.2% effective rate, though the top bracket is 22%.

Top bracket ≠ the rate you pay

The most useful thing the breakdown shows is that being “in the 22% bracket” does not mean paying 22% of your income. On $75,000 only the slice above $48,475 is taxed at 22%; the income below is taxed at 10% and 12%, so the average works out near 15%. This is why a raise is never “taxed away” by moving into a higher bracket — only the dollars above the threshold are taxed at the higher rate, and everything below keeps its lower rates. Turn on the full bracket table to see all the year’s brackets, including the higher ones you have not reached.

Deductions move the slices

Deductions reduce the income that reaches the brackets, which can drop your top bracket and always trims tax from the top down — at your marginal rate. If you start from gross income, enter your deductions (the standard deduction is $15,000 single / $30,000 married jointly for 2025) and the calculator works on the taxable figure. Because the top slice is removed first, a deduction is worth your marginal rate, not your effective one: a $1,000 deduction for someone in the 22% bracket saves $220. Add a state rate to fold in a flat state estimate; the breakdown remains federal.

— Reader questions

What tax bracket am I in?

Your top bracket is the highest rate your taxable income reaches. For a single filer in 2025, $75,000 tops out in the 22% bracket. Enter your income, year and status to see your bracket and the full breakdown.

How is tax calculated across brackets?

Each slice of your income is taxed at its bracket’s rate and the results are summed. On $75,000 (single, 2025): 10% of the first $11,925, 12% of the next $36,550, and 22% of the rest — $11,414 in total. The table shows each slice.

Does being in a higher bracket tax all my income at that rate?

No — that is the biggest misconception. Only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate; everything below keeps its lower rates. Your effective (average) rate is always well below your top bracket.

What are the 2025 federal tax brackets?

For 2025 the rates are 10, 12, 22, 24, 32, 35 and 37%, with thresholds that differ by filing status (for a single filer, 12% starts at $11,925 and 22% at $48,475). Turn on “show the full bracket table” to see them all for your status.

How do deductions affect my bracket?

Deductions lower your taxable income, removing the top slices first, which can drop your top bracket and save tax at your marginal rate. Enter your deductions to compute tax on the taxable figure rather than gross.
