— How it works
Annual = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year. The default 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours is a standard full-time year.
Hourly to yearly: multiply by your hours
An hourly wage becomes an annual salary once you know how many hours you work in a year. The standard assumption is 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks — 2,080 hours — so you multiply your rate by 2,080. A $25 hourly rate is $52,000 a year; $30 is $62,400. From there the monthly is the annual ÷ 12, the weekly ÷ 52, and biweekly ÷ 26. Change the hours per week or weeks per year to match a 37.5-hour week, part-time work, or a year with unpaid time off.
Worked example — $25/hour, 40 hrs/week, 52 weeks: Annual $52,000 · Monthly $4,333.33 · Biweekly $2,000 · Weekly $1,000 · Daily $200. At 37.5 hours instead, $25/hour is $48,750 a year.
The quick mental shortcut
There’s a handy approximation: double your hourly rate and add three zeros to get a rough annual. $25/hour → about $50,000; $40/hour → about $80,000. It works because 2 × 1,000 = 2,000, which is close to the real 2,080 hours, so it slightly understates the true figure (the exact number is a touch higher). Use the calculator for the precise amount and to fold in your actual hours, days off and pay frequency.
What this leaves out
These are gross figures — your salary before income tax, National Insurance or FICA, retirement contributions and any other deductions, so take-home will be lower. The annual also assumes you’re paid for every week of the year; if you’re an hourly worker without paid leave, set weeks per year (or paid days off) to reflect the time you’re actually paid for. For overtime-heavy roles, the base figure here covers your standard hours only.
— Reader questions
How much is $15 an hour a year?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), $15 an hour is $31,200 a year — about $2,600 a month. Fewer hours lower it proportionally.
How much is $20 an hour annually?
$20 × 2,080 hours = $41,600 a year, roughly $3,467 a month or $800 a week at full-time hours.
How do I convert my hourly wage to a salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work per week and by the weeks you work per year. The standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so multiply your rate by 2,080 for the annual.
Is the "double it and add three zeros" trick accurate?
It’s a close approximation that slightly understates the real figure. Doubling assumes 2,000 hours; the standard year is 2,080, so the true annual is about 4% higher. $25/hour ≈ $50,000 by the trick, $52,000 exactly.
Does this include overtime or tax?
No — it’s your base gross pay at standard hours, before any tax or deductions and before overtime. Use a take-home or income-tax calculator for net pay.
